Studio Practices

  • Elementally linked to landscape and located by the sea. Hannah Nowlan's studio continuously responds to both sustainability and the environment. As a result, Hannah is not afraid of reviewing and changing her processes.

Whilst the protection of our valuable artworks remains of vital importance. Beginning in 2020, the Hannah Nowlan studio discontinued the use of bubble wrap and single-use plastic to package artworks.

We always look forward to rethinking our materials, in response to the environment. With innovative solutions, Hannah continues to create sustainably-minded artworks.

  • Hannah maintains a fiercely independent approach to art-making. Preparing her materials in-house; ensuring the most considered outcome for every element.

Integral to Hannah’s studio and artistic practice is her Father, who handcrafts every stretcher and frame. Their sought-after Tasmanian Blackwood frames include signature double biscuit joinery. Thoughtfully pairing the unique grain of each timber frame with each artwork.

Hannah's key materials are Linen or Cotton Rag Paper. Pine and 100% PEFC Certified Tasmanian Blackwood. Our artworks and framing are acid-free, conservation and gallery standard. Each of Hannah’s original artworks also include a microfibre cloth and care instructions to keep your artwork in pristine condition for generations to come.

  • All studio and workshop floor waste is re-used, repurposed or recycled. All timber offcuts are used to keep us warm throughout winter. All sawdust and coffee grinds are repurposed in our compost bins, before making the journey into our studio garden.

All documentation is printed on recycled paper or off-cut/remnant papers.

Each artwork arrives in recycled brown paper or acid-free glassine to preserve the artwork. It is then wrapped in a custom protective blanket. This is our alternative to bubble wrap, made from 100% recycled fibres (30% PET Bottle Flakes, 60% Polyester Yarn Waste and 10% Polyester Fabric Waste).

Your artwork is then housed in a rigid envelope (100% recycled fibre), a cardboard box (made from more than 35% recycled fibre) or a custom-built timber crate (100% FSC certified). Our packaging is durable and reusable, allowing you to store and transport your artwork well into the future.

  • We offer a Complimentary Return Packaging Service for your artwork packaging. That way it can be reused, over and over.

Our custom built timber artwork crates are made well and made to last.

If your order is eligible for our complimentary service, we will send you an email. You can choose to opt-in to this free service and have your timber crate and protective blanket, returned to our studio for reuse or repurposing.
